Love Tips from Ancient Times
Does Fate Hold the Future of Your Love Life?
Looking for some good love tips to spice up your relationship? Perhaps you are looking for romantic ideas and tips to help you get the man or woman you want. Well you are not the first. People have been looking for short cuts to find true love for centuries and here we have a fun look at ways to cast a loving spell on the person of your dreams.
LOVE TIPS – LOVE TIPS FROM ANCIENT TIMES
Some of the most enduring ancient love tips are simply superstitions many of which have been with us since antiquity and are cross-cultural. The original meaning of the word 'superstition' is 'standing still in apprehension or awe'. They are believed to be a primitive way of dealing with uncertainty in everyday life. It is therefore not surprising to find that the subjects of relationships and sex have many thousands of superstitions connected to them. Here are few of my favourites from the Ancient Love Tipsters of Yore:
POTENCY LOVE TIPS
The Romans had some wonderful love tips to increase a man's potency. My personal favourite is the 'ointment' of Pliny the Elder. (Please note: Collecting the ingredients can prove a little difficult.) First we are instructed to rub our genitalia with the urine of a bull that has just mated with a cow. Next, bind to the same part the liver of a frog enclosed in the skin of a crane. Hang the eye-tooth of a crocodile on your arm and then lean your body against the right side of an elephant. The technique is sure to work- so long as you still feel like having sex after such an ordeal and of course the smell of bull urine is a sure turn on for any woman.
FERTILITY LOVE TIPS
In parts of America it is believed that is a married couple throw cow peas across the road near their home the women will become fertile. At Christmas we still hang up the mistletoe which is a pre-Christian tradition. According to folklore mistletoe in the house protects it from thunder and lightning. It also cures many diseases, is an antidote to poison and brings good luck and fertility. A girl standing under mistletoe cannot refuse to be kissed by anyone who claims the privilege. Similarly the giving of Easter Eggs comes from pagan times as a fertility symbol and rice, thrown after the wedding ceremony has always been a symbol of fertility.
As you would expect, some of the weirdest superstitions from around the world are about love, sex and marriage. If you want to meet your soul mate it's important to watch the signs. For example, you may be in for a good time if your lover brings you orchids as a gift for in some parts of England it is believed that this means that he wants to seduce you. Because of their shape orchids are named after the Greek word orchis meaning 'testicles'.
LOVE TIPS FOR BETTER RELATIONSHIPS
Superstitious young girls would use love charms to entrap their ideal man. The great majority of these love charms that have come down through the ages deal with dreams and how to ensure that the targeted person may visit her as she sleeps. If she dreamed she saw a man whose face was hidden it was a sign that she would be married very soon but had not met her future husband yet. If she saw a man who was a stranger to her, he was the man she would marry and they would meet quite shortly. Some of the charms to induce these dreams included:
Dumb Cake: Three girls must arrange to sleep together and the first must borrow a wedding ring from a woman who has worn it for three years. Before retiring the girls must make a cake together. The cake must them be divided between them. Each girl then breaks their portion into nine pieces which they then pass through the wedding ring and eat. The ring is hung above the head of the bed. All the time from the first mixing of the cake until the eating of the last crumb, not a word must be spoken. Dreams of the future husband will follow. (Naturally I disagree with the cynics who have remarked that this charm is impossible to work, since no three women would keep silent for so long.)
St Agnes Charms: This one only works on St Agnes Eve (Evening of the 20th January) A young woman must kiss no one during the day- not even a child. She must sleep in a clean night-dress and clean sheets. She must take a paper of pins and take nine of the pins and fasten them onto the left arm of her night-dress. If she manages to sleep with them all night she will dream of her future husband.
Dead man's love charm: This Irish love charm is a must for men who want to win the love of a girl. First the difficult part: somehow he must procure a long hair from her head and thread it through a needle. Once this is done he then simply runs it into the leg of a dead man. (It is best if the deceased is a murderer.) The hair has to go to the grave with the body, and as it decays so love for you will flourish in your true love's heart. Clearly the simplest solutions are always the best.
LOVE TIPS FOR WEDDINGS
You would need to invite your own Freudian analyst to your wedding to fully understand the many hundreds of sexual and fertilty symbols that are present in our marriage ceremony. However, spare a thought for the Galla tribe brides of Ethiopia. For good luck and fertility she must, on her wedding day, stiffen her hair with butter and rub her body with civet, which makes it smell like cat urine. The wedding ceremony begins when the bridegroom climbs into the bride's lap and sits there while a mixture of butter and honey is poured over them. Or consider the men of the Macusi Indians in Guiana. To be virile enough, or perhaps hen-pecked enough, for marriage they must be sewn up in a hammock full of fire ants. Fortunately European superstitions are not quite so painful or messy but nonetheless we also have some peculiar nuptial superstitions of our own. Many of these are all that's left of rituals from long ago.
UK LOVE TIPSTERS
Here are just a few from our own fantasy folklore:
- Sisters and brothers: It has always been considered unlucky for two sisters to marry two brothers as there is only so much luck to go around.
- Birthdays: it is unlucky to be married on your birthday.
- Wedding day: The luckiest month to marry is in June as it was ruled by the Roman goddess Juno, the faithful wife of Jupiter, who is the protector or women and marriage.
- Tying the knot: They used to actually do this in Babylonian times. The priest would that a thread from the bride and groom's clothes and symbolically tie the couple together.
- Something Blue: A small blue item with the white dress is a symbol for the sky and the colour of heavens.
- Bouquet: Flowers are an ancient symbol for sex and fertility.
- Omens: It is bad luck to see a pig, funeral or be stopped by the police but it is a good sign is the brides path is crossed by a black cat, chimney sweep or an elephant.
MODERN SUPERSTITIONS AND CRAZY LOVE TIPS
It is believed that blondes are dumb and when it comes to sex that are 'more fun'. But before you reach for the bleach it is also believed that the sexiest people of all are those who have ginger hair. For a man shoe and hat size are all-important for men with big feet or a big head are said to have a big penis. Similarly Latin men and those from hot countries have more sexual potency because of the generative power of the sun. And did you know that many Americans believe that girls wearing contact lenses cannot take oral contraceptive pills or that a douche with Coca-Cola will prevent pregnancy?
Many people are uncomfortable living in a world of randomness, and superstitions may help them cope. My own work as a medium brings me into contact with many people who are superstitious. For example there are many people who believe that burning specially empowered candles will prevent a marriage breaking apart. One of my clients was told by a 'psychic' that her relationship was in danger of splitting and was advised to buy her special magic candles at $2,000 each. She was told that her case was so bad that she would require at least six! Clearly so long as there is uncertainly in people minds about relationships they will continue to turn to superstition and sometimes into the hands of charlatans.
